Physical Education

Mondays

Now is the time to run and jump and play, and develop our motor skills through a variety of fun games and activities.  We will spend as much time as possible in the fresh air outdoors, retreating to the gym only in the most inclement of weather.

Our PE curriculum for kindergarten this year will be a mix of the P.E.E.K. program and Charles Nagel's play activities for primary grades, compiled by our PE specialist Mr. Miller and adapted for use by the kindergarten team.

Science

Tuesdays

A wonderful and amazing world awaits the curiousity and imagination of our kindergartens in the science room.  We will learn about scientific inquiry and the scientific method through classification, record observations in our tree journals, and learn about the plants, animals, and insects that make up the wide variety of biological diversity on planet Earth.

Our science curriculum is an extensive collection of various components compiled by our highly experienced science teacher Mrs. Modjeski over the years.  Her fun, engaging experiements and activities continue to inspire deep thought in young minds!

Information Literacy

Wednesdays

Young people today are constantly exposed to new technologies, and need to be flexible and versatile in adapting to their uses.  Therefore we expose children to computers and iPads from a young age, ensuring their familiarity with existing technologies and fostering an excitement and eagerness to embrace and explore new technologies as they develop.

Our curriculum is largely centered around basic computer use, and the web links page found here, set up by our wonderful info lit specialist Mrs. Raymond.

Art

Thursdays

Creative expression is a key component of whole child education.  Artistic exercise not only develops fine motor skills and hand eye coordination, but it ignites connections in the brain that allow kids to perceive and produce things in many different ways, boosting confidence and developing important problem solving skills.

Our art curriculum is based on the Discover Art Kindergarten program, and has been developed and refined by our passionate art specialist Vicki St. Onge, who ensures that Bel Air is a more beautiful place to learn and live each day with her inspirational artwork and quotes.

Music "gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything".  More importantly (for our purposes), musical education forges neural pathways in the young developing mind that are proven to improve linguistic fluency and deepen understanding of mathematical concepts.  It develops non-verbal communication skills, increases focus, and dramatically improves spatial awareness.  In short, music education is a vital, inextricable component of whole child education.

Our music curriculum this year will be a fusion of several different components inspired by our fantastic music teacher Roxanne Britz.  The curriculum will center around What to Teach When, a thoughtful and engaging music curriculum by expert early childhood music specialists Brian Hiller & Don Dupont, and augmented with material from Share the Music (McGraw-Hill), Listening Fun by Dan Fee, and I've Got to Move by Tim Brophy.
